Dist 57 Professional Development

A Professional Learning Community

For our second session it might be helpful to break up our time into a few different parts. First, we'll spend time investigating our own personal learning network, or tools that allow you personally to connect or learn with others.

Second, we'll have time for you to investigate tools that you might already be using in class, or interested in. We'll concentrate on how you can use technology to integrate information into curriculum.

Over the next week, please post a comment here on something you're already doing and hope to further explore, or would like to investigate during the session.

I am just starting to use a smart board. I am interested in learning how to attach things like Brain-POP to lessons as well as how to best use it to keep students interested and engaged learners.

I use Excel often to monitor student behavior using graphs and tables. I would like to learn more ways of using Excel as a data tool. Are there any other computer programs I should be using to do this?

I hope that during the session both of you can explore some tools that will allow you to find answers to both of your needs. We'll try and use a few tools that hopefully will connect you with other teachers and resources that might get both of you going.

I would like to be able to use the smartboard as well and add other media for use with students.

I would like to be able to create a way for students to blog to me as some teachers are doing about the topics we are studying. They could ask questions and even answer each other's questions. I would like to attach this on my website for school.

Hi Kathy,

That shouldn't be a problem. We've got some teachers already blogging in the district. We can get you started on Friday.

I would like to set up a blog as well. I signed up for an account but have not had much time to play around with it.

For those of you thinking about student blogging, here are some online resources:

Rubrics:
Categorized rubric
Simple point rubric

How to grow a student blog- longer post but has some good stuff
Finally some basic blogging 'rules' from both a teacher and students. It's at 10th grade level but much are appropriate for younger students.

With so many new things all the time, it is challenging to utilize these technologies in a manner that the students can connect with. It's fun to think about and discuss.

As the LRC Director for Lincoln, I'd like to investigate tech tools which will help me assist the teachers when we're developing units. For example, I've seen some excellent blogging activities in LA/Reading classes.
